The coronavirus has forced us to do many things. To stay indoors, to keep our distance, and to delve into a virtual world. But it’s also forced us to be creative, and in so doing, we’ve discovered a whole host of things we never thought we would or could do. One of which is creating a personal spa in our very own bathroom.

Given the amount of turmoil in the world, we’re constantly bombarded with additional mental stressors that can have a physically negative result.  Now, more than ever, it's essential to get an adequate amount of sleep, fresh air, and take time for yourself - and you don’t have to go far in order to do it.

We've put together several easy ways to turn your bathroom into your own oasis.

Ensure the Space is Visually Clean

Of course, we all know that having a clean bathroom is important.  But it’s equally just as essential to have a visually clean space.  Simply put, you need to simplify your surroundings.  Clutter subconsciously contributes to anxiety, stress, and the feeling of being overwhelmed.  It is a visual signal to our brain that our work is never done.  And you can only imagine how that would make you feel day after day.

By removing unnecessary clutter and containers off of surfaces and into storage;  also a perfect time to check any expiry dates and organize those cupboards, you can more easily calm the mind.

A clean and clear space is a calming space.

    Greenery

    eucalyptus bouquet

The benefits of plants are endless, from improving air quality to speeding up recovery from illness.  They can also mentally reduce negativity, stress, and studies have shown they make people happier overall.

A few easy ways to include greenery in your bathroom is, of course, by adding a plant.  However, if you don’t have the necessary light or are looking for something easier to care for, try a succulent or air plant. Another simple addition is to hang dry eucalyptus in the shower.  You benefit from the visual greenery, and the steam from the shower will release the natural eucalyptus aroma.

    Sounds

We’ve all either been to a spa, or have seen them enough in film, to know that a predominate signifier of walking into a spa is the type of sounds you hear.  Whether it's calming music or sounds of nature, such as crashing waves on the shoreline, listening to music can have an enormous relaxing effect on not only your mind but also your body.

Music, or calming sounds, can absorb our attention and act as a distraction at the same time.  This allows us time to explore our emotions and thoughts, which can be a tremendous aid to meditation by helping to prevent the mind from wandering.

    Warm + Cozy

It goes without saying that we’re all much more comfortable when we’re dressed in cozy clothing.  Being wrapped in soft fabric is like a big hug, allowing us the opportunity to take a deep breath and be at ease. Be sure you have a robe that makes you feel like your best self hanging nearby.

    Scent

Scent can be a powerful tool.  It is known to be a closest linked sense to memory, and as such, can quickly aid in calming the mind and body - if used correctly. Aromatherapy can provide relief from stress, depression, and anxiety - and improve sleep quality.

There are many ways of including scent in your new home spa: a candle, incense, a diffuser, or making your own essential oil cocktail for a soak in the tub.

    Treat Yourself

Time is one of the most precious things.  Be sure you take the time to allow yourself to fully rest and reset.  Grab a cleansing face mask or body scrub for that truly at-home spa experience.  Sit back and let the relaxation wash over you.
